Big Brothers Big Sisters of America's goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth “Littles” through professionally supported One-to-One relationships with caring adults “Bigs”. We help Littles gain a different perspective and achieve their potential as they grow to become confident, competent and caring individuals, by providing committed volunteers, national leadership and standards of excellence.

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Nantucket, as part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay is affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the oldest one-to-one mentoring agency in the country. Our community-based programs are modeled on national standards that have been proven effective over the years in helping children and youth face challenges in their lives, simply by having an adult friend. We also offer a number of mentoring opportunities that meet the specific needs of the island.
Over the years we have served hundreds of island children and foresee continued steady growth. Increasing numbers of children who face difficult home lives because of an absent parent, limited resources or other problems need adult friends. A "Big" mentor can be an important adjunct for a child at risk by providing an increased sense of belonging, and by reinforcing communication skills, teamwork, community service and relationship building
Big Brothers Big Sisters programs are sustained through generous private, Foundation and corporate giving, with only a small fraction coming from government sources
